Michael Sagmeister


Michael Sagmeister, born in 1959, is among the world’s most renowned Jazz and Fusion guitarists. He is regarded as one of the leading artists in his field and frequently called a legend and an icon by his audience and critics.

Originally from Frankfurt, Germany, he was considered a child prodigy and has been an integral part of the international jazz scene since his teenage years. His first albums also appeared at this time, and these would soon lead him on tours of the world. His more than 30 albums and CDs show him to be one of the most creative and prolific artists in jazz. In the course of his long career he has worked with some of the most important musicians on the scene. To name just a few:

Along with being a performing artist, Sagmeister has always placed great emphasis on communicating his love of Jazz and his profound knowledge of his instrument, as well as his immense technical proficiency to younger musicians. This pursuit was honored with his appointment as Full Professor of Jazz Guitar at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. His years-long dedication to “spreading the word” of his beloved instrument has lead him to become one of the most in-demand jazz educators in the world.

Michael Sagmeister was the first German instructor at the renowned the Berklee College of Music. He has also taught at many other of the world’s leading jazz education institutes, including New York’s New School, MGI in Munich, Akademie für Musische Bildung und Medienwissenschaften Remscheid, the University of Hamburg, the Glen Buschmann Jazz Academy Dortmund, the Schorndorf Jazz Guitar Festival, Music Academy Bremen, etc. Since 1995, he has regularly published columns in Germany’s leading music magazine, “Gitarre und Bass.” He has been a member of the faculty of the Mediterranean Music School since 1997.

With the appearance in 1992 of the Warner Bothers production “Scale Designs,” Sagmeister made his entrance into the world of multimedia. As an author, he has enjoyed great success. His 1999 book “Sagmeister’s Jazzgitarre” (AMA Publishing) is the best-selling German-language jazz instructional book on the market, and is considered to be the standard work in this field. The same publisher brought out “Arpeggios” in 2001. “The Michael Sagmeister Songbook” appeared in 2004, published by Acoustic Music.
